Only undertakings that employ staff (including the self-employed) are included here.

Undertakings are classified into sectors using the UK Standard Industrial Classification 2007 system.

The source of this data is the manpower return, collected monthly for employers and twice-yearly for sole traders, under the Control of Housing and Work Law. The latest report on jobs and employment can be found here. This report includes the number of private undertakings by size and sector.
